DESCRIPTION:The birds show the way. Annual bird counts at Highlands Nature Sanctuary/Arc of Appalachia in SE Ohio\, indicated to avid birders that about 35 species migrate from the cloud forests of Guatemala to/or through the Sanctuary to breed. In 2024\, the Arc director connected with the Community Cloud Forest Conservation (CCFC) organization in Alta VeraPaz\, Guatemala to celebrate this connection and consider becoming sister organizations. A second trip in 1/25 with a dozen Arc members revealed that much more than birds connect us. Up close and personal connections with the plants\, critters and people on the land reveal some surprises in this small Caribbean country that some of our neighbors in Cincinnati come from. If you are a fan of bird watching\, wilderness hiking\, caving or growing and eating good food\, you’ll enjoy this look into how these things influence another culture.

You can use this time (or afterwards) to see Marcy’s amazing art piece. \nAbout Marcy’s art piece\, “In the Middle of Everything” \nMarcy is the recipient of the 2025 Vance Wadell residency program at the Wave Pool gallery. \nDeep within the heart of the forest\, ancient and magical creatures dwell. Towering\, timeworn trees have long been home to countless living beings—animals\, insects\, and\, as whispered in folklore\, ethereal beings such as fairies. Together\, they safeguard the trees\, illuminating them with colors\, symbols and patterns unseen by the human eye. Yet\, for those who pause\, who take the time to truly observe\, listen\, and feel\, the unseen magic may begin to reveal itself.  \n‘In the Middle of Everything’ is an in situ installation\, conceived specifically for the site of Imago\, nestled within a preserved natural sanctuary. This project serves as a reminder of the beauty and fragility of forests—an invitation to recognize them as vital\, living ecosystems that demand\nour care and respect. In return\, nature\, with its unseen guardians\, might reward us in the most unexpected and wondrous ways. \nFor when we stand among these enchanted trees\, we find ourselves in the middle of everything.

SUMMARY:10th Annual Plaid Friday Hike
DESCRIPTION:Black Friday? More like\, plaid Friday. Once again we’ll thumb our nose at wanton consumerism by moving our bodies in our beautiful city. Each year we pick a great urban route and head out together to explore\, be in community\, and enjoy the late fall weather. \nOnce again there are two routes to choose from – a morning easier route\, and an afternoon advanced route. \nHike 1: The Beautiful River Route 9:30 – 12:00. This is a favorite route. We’ll hike along the Ohio River exploring Sawyer Point\, Serpentine Wall\, and northern Kentucky. We’ll cross three bridges and two rivers in this flat and gentle walk. \nThis route is appropriate for strollers. Approximately 4 miles \nHike 2: The Mt. Adams Stairs. 1:00 – 3:30 pm. You’ve heard about the Mt. Adams stairs\, now you get to climb them. We’ll start at Friendship Peace Park and cross over Columbia Parkway to the base of Mt. Adams\, then climb the stairs and get to the top! Once there we’ll explore views\, and some lesser known pockets of Eden Park before making our way back. \nThis route is NOT recommended for stollers. This route contains one significant climb. Approximately 4 miles.
