How to Start a Native Flower Garden

This workshop will cover how to start a landscape garden with design elements that will provide continuous color and year-round interest through use of a variety of plants – mostly native perennials, with a touch of annual plants.

Class topics will cover the basic steps in creating a landscape garden, including but not limited to:

  • Site selection & evaluation
  • Plant selection
  • Garden layout/design
  • Soil preparation
  • Planting
  • Garden care & maintenance 
  • Benefits of native plants

Attendees will have an opportunity to participate in site prep and actual planting of a garden bed at the front entrance of Imago.

Lynn Lorio is a professional horticulturist with a career in public horticulture spanning 6 years working at places such as the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, Green City Resources, and most recently at Cincinnati Parks. Professionally, Lynn enjoys improving community landscapes through beautification projects. An 8 year resident of East Price Hill, she and her family live in a home built in 1914 where over the years she has worked on transforming a lackluster yard into a picturesque landscape. Imago is excited to co-host this event with our friends from Do It Yourself Darlin' (DIYD). DIYD is a nonprofit that hosts educational, hands-on home repair workshops for new and veteran homeowners, renters, and everyone in between. Theirworkshops aim to empower you to feel comfortable and confident understanding the components that make up a house while learning basic home repair skills along the way.
